Representation With Purpose: How PR is Uplifting the Asian Community—Together

There are moments when our profession doesn’t just show up—it leads. For me, those moments happened recently through two powerful examples: the PRSA AANHPI Affinity Group’s Heritage Month panel, and the PRSA-LA article “Leading With Purpose.” Both offered more than inspiration—they showed what’s possible when representation meets community and purpose.

As a proud Asian American and public relations professional, I’ve always believed that storytelling can change lives. And lately, I’ve never been prouder of how our industry is using its voice to celebrate identity, uplift unheard communities, and build something bigger than a campaign.

Two Moments, One Message

At the PRSA AANHPI panel titled, Leading Voices: AANHPI Leaders Shaping the Future of Communications, I had the honor of attending a conversation filled with truth, warmth, and wisdom. Our panelists didn’t just share resumes—they shared roots. They talked about family, heritage, and what it means to lead in rooms where no one else looks like you. It was real, it was emotional, and most importantly—it was a reflection of what our industry should be.

Then, I read PRSA-LA’s “Leading With Purpose featuring Asian American communicators who are redefining leadership through cultural fluency, empathy, and authenticity. Leaders like Matt and Kuya John are proving that diversity isn’t just a trend—it’s a value. These professionals are changing boardrooms, campaigns, and communities by simply being who they are and making room for others.

Why This Matters

Together, these two pieces show the best of PR:

  • Representation that feels real: We’re moving beyond tokenism. We’re amplifying heritage, history, and voice.
  • Community that shows up: From mentorship to panels to Affinity Groups, Asian pros are building networks that lift as they climb.
  • Leadership with impact: We’re not just writing press releases—we’re shaping narratives about identity, inclusion, and belonging.

A Personal Reflection

As a New Mexican Filipina in PR, I know how powerful it is to feel seen. I know what it means to look around a room—or a Zoom—and find people who share your story. And I know the weight that comes with being “the only one.” But I also know the strength we gain when we come together.

That’s what I saw in these two moments. That’s what I feel in this profession right now.

We still have work to do. But this work feels hopeful when I see Asian communicators leaning in—not just during AANHPI Heritage Month, but all year long. And it’s especially encouraging to see our industry leaders and institutions make space for that growth with purpose.

Let’s Keep Going

To everyone who’s part of this wave of representation: thank you. Let’s continue to mentor, speak out, write with heart, and show up for one another. Whether it’s through panels, features, blogs, or behind-the-scenes strategy calls—our presence matters.

And to those wondering how to help: listen, learn, lift others, and keep making room. Inclusion isn’t a box to check—it’s the foundation of what makes our work powerful and our stories resonate.

Because when we lead with representation and purpose, we don’t just change the narrative—we own it.
