The gap between academic theory and professional reality is often wide. For students, crossing that bridge is essential to understanding not just what a job entails, but what a career feels like. At Siarza, we believe that internships are more than just a line item on a resume or a semester requirement. They are a fundamental testing ground for the future leaders of our industry. We view our internship program as a two-way street: we provide mentorship and real-world exposure, and in return, we gain fresh perspectives from the next generation of creative minds.

Recently, we had the privilege of hosting Scarlett Hayter, a high school student with a keen interest in the mechanics of business and marketing. While many wait until college to dip their toes into the corporate world, Scarlett dove in early, bringing an eagerness to learn that reinvigorated our team. Her experience highlights exactly why we invest time and resources into cultivating young talent. It isn’t just about teaching them how to use software or sit in on meetings; it is about demystifying the professional environment and empowering them to contribute.

Scarlett’s journey with Siarza took her through the nuances of public relations, the creativity of graphic design, and the agility of a hybrid work culture. We sat down with Scarlett to reflect on her time with the team, discussing the lessons she learned, the confidence she built, and how her career trajectory has shifted based on her experience behind the scenes. Her insights offer a compelling look at the value of hands-on learning in a modern, innovative agency.

The Value of Early Professional Exposure

For a high school student, the professional world can often seem intimidating and difficult to enter. Breaking down those barriers early can change the entire trajectory of a student’s education. Scarlett’s time at Siarza was designed to be immersive. We didn’t want her on the sidelines; we wanted her in the mix.

Reflecting on the totality of her time with us, Scarlett noted the dual value of learning technical skills alongside professional etiquette.

“As a high school student stepping into the professional world for the first time, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from my internship at Siarza. Looking back, I can confidently say that it was an incredible experience that not only taught me about marketing but also introduced me to the dynamics of the professional world. Everyone at Siarza welcomed me with open arms, guiding me as I navigated this new journey.”

This sentiment underscores a critical philosophy at Siarza: exposure breeds competence. By allowing a high school student to witness the day-to-day operations of an agency, we remove the mystery of the workplace. Scarlett was able to see that marketing isn’t just about catchy slogans; it’s about deadlines, communication, strategy, and collaboration.

Overcoming the Fear of the Unknown

One of the greatest hurdles for any intern, regardless of age, is the pressure to perform perfectly from day one. There is a natural inclination to want to prove one’s worth by knowing all the answers. However, in an innovative and fast-moving agency environment, knowing everything is impossible. The real skill lies in knowing how to find the answer.

Scarlett candidly shared that her biggest takeaway was learning to let go of the need to appear omniscient.

“The most valuable of all the lessons I have learned would probably be that it is always better to ask questions. This was a new experience for me, and I’ll admit, part of me wanted to appear like I always had it all figured out. But I quickly realized that reaching out for help not only improved my experience but also helped me learn so much more.”

By embracing the vulnerability of being a learner, Scarlett accelerated her growth. She realized that asking a question wasn’t a sign of weakness, but a tool for efficiency. This shift in mindset, from “faking it” to actively seeking knowledge, is a hallmark of professional maturity. It allowed her to integrate deeper into the team and take on more complex tasks with the assurance that she had a safety net of support behind her.

Turning Creativity into Confidence

Confidence in a creative field comes from seeing your ideas manifested in the real world. Theory is useful, but execution is validating. During her internship, Scarlett wasn’t just observing; she was creating. One specific project stood out as a turning point for her self-assurance. She was tasked with creating a visual concept for a high-profile event, which required her to interpret a brief, apply creative logic, and consider the context of the event (location, mood, audience)

“One of my most proud moments was after I had finished making a Pinterest board at the request of Kristelle for the PRSA Spring Conference. I went for a pink and orange sunset theme as the conference was being held in California. I remember sending Kristelle my design, anxious for her response. Once she told me she loved it, I was ecstatic! I couldn’t wait to share my excitement with my family and friends.”

That moment of ecstasy is the spark that fuels a career. When a supervisor validates a creative choice, it confirms that the intern’s instincts are aligned with professional standards. For Scarlett, the “pink and orange sunset theme” wasn’t just a color palette; it was proof that she could contribute meaningfully to a client project. These micro-wins build the foundation of a confident professional.

Broadening Career Horizons

Marketing is a vast ecosystem. Often, students looking in from the outside see only a narrow slice of the industry, usually just the advertising or management side. One of the primary goals for our interns is to show the interconnectivity of different disciplines. We want to show how public relations talks to digital, how digital relies on creativity, and how strategy underpins it all.

Scarlett entered the internship with a specific career path in mind, but her experience widened her aperture.

“Originally, I was interested in becoming a marketing manager, seeing and analyzing what works and what doesn’t; however, after observing the inner workings of Siarza, my eyes have been opened to more than just marketing. I got to sit in on PR meetings, something I hadn’t even considered as a career path, and attended events that helped me build valuable connections. I began to realize the vast opportunities within the marketing and communications field, which has inspired me to explore my options further as I prepare for college.”

This realization is perhaps the most significant outcome of her time with us. By understanding the full spectrum of the industry, from analytics to event management, she is better equipped to find a niche that truly fits her talents and passions.

Experiencing a Modern, Hybrid Culture

The workplace has changed. The rigid 9-to-5 cubicle life is rapidly being replaced by flexible, hybrid models that prioritize results and connection over physical presence. A hybrid environment requires a specific type of culture to succeed, one based on communication and intentional connection. If the culture isn’t strong, a hybrid team can feel disconnected. For a student, seeing this modern way of working is a revelation.

Scarlett noted this unique environment as a pleasant surprise.

“Something that surprised me about working here was the environment. I have never observed a hybrid working environment as Siarza has. Along with this, I enjoyed observing the close connections of everyone who works here at Siarza. I instantly felt welcomed, and everyone was so friendly.”

For Scarlett, this welcoming atmosphere made the learning curve less steep and the daily work more enjoyable. It demonstrated that a professional environment can be both high-performing and high-empathy.

The Future is Bright

Scarlett Hayter’s time at Siarza serves as a case study for the importance of internships. She moved from uncertainty to confidence, from a narrow view of marketing to a broad understanding of the industry, and from a student to a budding professional.

We are incredibly proud of the work Scarlett accomplished and the growth she demonstrated. Her ability to ask the right questions, execute creative visions, and adapt to our hybrid culture suggests a bright future ahead. As she moves forward into college and beyond, she carries with her not just a letter of recommendation, but a toolkit of real-world experiences that will serve her for decades.
